Thai Labor Networks Urge Action on ILO Platform Work Convention

Labor networks in Thailand have urged the government to take an active role in shaping the International Labour Organization’s draft convention on decent work in the platform economy, citing widespread gaps in rights and protections for platform workers.

In a statement issued on February 4, 2026, the networks said platform work has grown rapidly and now employs more than one million workers in Thailand, many of whom lack job security, social protection, and adequate labor rights.

As the ILO moves forward with drafting a global standard on platform work, the networks said Thailand should engage seriously to ensure the convention reflects real working conditions and delivers concrete protections.

They called on the government to participate constructively in the 114th International Labour Conference in June 2026, align domestic laws with international labor standards, and ratify the new ILO instrument once adopted. The networks also urged a review of proposed legislation that would classify platform workers as “semi-independent workers,” warning it could weaken labor rights.

In addition, the networks renewed calls for Thailand to ratify ILO Conventions No. 87 and No. 98 on freedom of association and collective bargaining, saying ratification would strengthen labor rights nationwide.
