Thailand Seeks Iran’s Help for Thai Crew, Safe Passage Through Strait of Hormuz

BANGKOK — The Iranian ambassador to Thailand met with Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Thailand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, on March 19, 2026, to discuss assistance for three Thai crew members aboard the vessel Mayuree Naree and to ensure safe passage for Thai commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

During the meeting, the Thai side reiterated its request for support in securing the safety of the crew and maintaining uninterrupted maritime navigation. The Iranian ambassador said he had already conveyed these concerns to authorities in Tehran, adding that Iran, in principle, is willing to assist on both matters.

Regarding the Mayuree Naree, Iran is currently coordinating with Oman to help rescue the remaining crew and tow the vessel. However, the ambassador noted that ongoing indiscriminate airstrikes along coastal areas by the United States and Israel have made operations significantly more difficult.

He advised that the Royal Thai Navy should coordinate directly with Oman’s coast guard, which could then liaise with Iranian authorities through naval channels.

On the issue of Thai commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, both sides held discussions, with the Iranian ambassador expressing support for Thailand, as a friendly nation, to be granted safe passage. He added that he would follow up with Iranian authorities and seek a formal response as soon as possible.
